Research

Research is at the heart of effective advocacy.

SHARE undertakes and supports research that identifies barriers to care, informs policy, and drives improvements in sexual and reproductive health.

From our Cost of Contraception Report to current work exploring pain management during IUD insertion, our research helps build the evidence needed for meaningful change.

Current Research Project:

Pain management during IUD insertion in Australia: A scoping review

IUDs are one of the most effective forms of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) available. However, many people avoid getting one because they are worried about pain during the procedure. Others who do get an IUD report that the pain was worse than expected or not well managed.

At the moment, there is no consistent approach across Australia for managing pain during IUD insertion where some people are offered pain relief, while others are not. Experiences can also vary depending on the provider, setting, and individual circumstances.

This project will bring together existing research to better understand these experiences and identify gaps.

Past Research Projects

This report has been created by the SHARE campaign team to discuss current lived experiences of contraceptives and to gain insight of current cost and financial impacts contraceptives have.
